Greatest Dance Crazes – as liked by me!
A hit in October 2008, ‘Single Ladies’ received widespread critical acclaim for its catchy hook and theme of female empowerment. The song’s accompanying music video, shot entirely in black and white, achieved great popularity thanks to its choreography and won several awards, including Video of the Year at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. The dance routine prompted many imitations and parodies from men and women all around the world, including notable celebrities. The music video is said to have started the “first major dance craze” of the millennium and of the internet age.
MC Hammer’s 1990 hit signature song features many wonders including; Hammer pants, energetic looking dance moves such as the running man and the crab, and of course ‘Stop…Hammer-time!’. It samples Rick James’ “Super Freak” heavily, who subsequently sued MC Hammer (real name Stanley Kirk Burrell), and got loads of money through an out of court settlement. The early 90’s at their best.
A hit in early 1979, the song reached #2 on the U.S. charts and No.1 in the UK, becoming the group’s biggest hit ever. It is one of few singles to have sold 10 million or more copies worldwide. Although camper than a row of tents, the song was never actually written to be the massive gay anthem that it became. Try repeating that to yourself as you’re doing the hand movements down the local disco though. Here we go, Y – M – C – A!
